Stonemaier Games reveals Red Junglefowl from the upcoming Wingspan Asia Expansion
Happy 10th anniversary Stonemaier Games!
This is the bird that our iconic domestic chickens descend from. This bird was first confirmed at Gencon 2022 where its art could be seen on the Wingspan Nesting Box on display there. Now we get to see its game text.
This multi-habitat bird is a great way to generate early game eggs from the Forest and the Wetlands. The five egg cap of its power feels like a new way to slightly limit late game Grasslands egg spam strategies. It has a moderate and fair food cost, although with all the videos I’ve seen of chickens eating mice, I wonder if it shouldn’t have a wild food symbol for at least one in its cost (the same could be said about the various Herons and Egrets in the game).
Red Junglefowl doesn’t muster the same overall power and flexibility of Chipping Sparrow or Mourning Dove, but I do consider it a better card than California Quail in a head to head comparison, due to its flexible habitat placement and cheaper cost.
What do the red corners on this card indicate? Could it be another scenario for introducing new players to the game, such as the original Swift Start Pack? Is this for a new game variant? A new Automa variant?
I wonder if we will see more cards in the Wingspan Asia Expansion that have effects that limit their capabilities in certain habitats. Will “Jungle” count for cartographer? I think that’s a safe bet.
I’d rate Red Junglefowl as Tier 1 on our Wingspan Bird Card Tier List
